The Surf’s Up Surf Report :

Beach re-nourishment continues on the long time surf spot Upham, a spot that was once a point-like wave that wrapped around the artificial structure in place to hold up the touristy building’s proclaimed front yard. Sand being pulled from offshore is being pumped into the beaches. Rocks are being piled up on the beach around a rock placeholder.  It’s a beach project like no other. Only like the previously identical one at Honeymoon Island, of course. What should you think of all this? Continue reading Surf’s Up Surf Report: 5:30pm, Thursday at Treasure Island

A Golfer’s Paradise

When the first few fronts start rolling in the climate in the area goes from bathing suit weather to cooler sweater weather, although through most of the winter you’ll find days warm enough for shorts and a collared t-shirt. During November the temperatures only have the most subtle drop, even steamy at times. During early Fall the best times to get onto the links are the days after the mild-moderate cold fronts push across the state, leaving comfortable air in the mornings and evenings in their wake. Fall and Spring are usually the best times to get onto the course, although deep in the heart of winter the greens are often rolling at their fastest speeds, and the overseeding has usually filled in to a plush green carpet-like fairway on the best courses.

Here in northern Pinellas County it’s a golfers paradise. We’ve got about 10 or more different golf courses within a 10 mile radius. Some of the many public courses are Lansbrook, Wentworth, Tarpon Springs, Innisbrook, Fox Hollow, Crescent Oaks, Chi Chi Rodriguez, and Dunedin. The completely private courses that require a membership are East Lake Woodlands, Countryside, and Cypress Run. Take your pick from any of these fantastic golf courses. The many courses give you choices like undulating greens designed to challenge righty or lefty gripped golfers, wide or narrow fairways, long or short courses, swampy gator filled courses or osprey and fox squirrel filled courses on high ground, low cost or extremely expensive, there’s something for everybody.

Sand Key Lifeguards

Lifeguards and fire rescue play a central role in water safety on many of the beaches of Pinellas County. These individuals who are trained in lifesaving, first aid, and water safety help ensure visitors enjoy a safe day at the beach. Continue reading Sand Key Lifeguards

Skimboarding at 880 Mandalay Ave, Clearwater Beach, Florida

It’s summer, and if your interested in catching a wave this time of year you can usually catch one on a skimboard. During the evening a decent little shore-break wave can come up if enough of a sea-breeze forms, typically from a northwest wind. We usually look for the sea-breeze to start to develop after around 12 noon. By around 4 or 5pm there can be a really fun skimboarding wave at the right spots.

Independence Day 2017: Fourth of July Weather Forecast

As we move through this fourth of July weekend and approach this Tuesday Independence Day, you might be starting to wonder if rain will dampen your fireworks plans. We’ve had day after day of rain for the past few days, and this upcoming week will be no different. Rain is forecast for the rest of the week at around 50% each day. But the question remains: Will there be rain during the fireworks displays on Tuesday evening?

Rain chances this year are like many Fourth of July holidays. The rain chances will be much higher during the day while the bright sun is at its hottest. By 8:30 the sun will begin to set, and we’ll enter twilight. You can expect the rain chances to quickly drop as we approach sunset. Immediately after the sun sets, the rain chances drop to 5%. With those low rain chances there will still be the possibility of scattered showers like the picture above, however rain isn’t likely to interrupt the fireworks start time. If all goes as planned, we’ll have another bright, colorful Independence Day celebration.
