That epic weather model, the primary forecasting model for weather forecasting in the united states, the GFS, has recently been upgraded. This is an important model for forecasting surf in the gulf. The upgrades to the supercomputers are no small upgrades. At the beginning of the year, the supercomputers used to create this weather model, Luna and Surge, increased their analysis capability by four times their original power. And just about two weeks ago, and thanks to the increased capabilities of the supercomputers, the GFS can now analyze satellite data in four dimensions. The upgrades are via a 44 million dollar computer contract with IBM. These upgrades are making the ability to predict weather that much more accurate and precise.
