Cold Front Forecast: The swell goes a notch up.

Our chances for afternoon surf are looking good.  The swell showing up on the SWAN model is looking fun.  It will definately be longboardable again, and may even be fun on a shortboard. The temps will cool and the humidity will drop.  These temperatures are unprecedented.

SWAN is kicking out swell heights at 4 to 5 feet and periods at 4-6 seconds.  We are probably leaning more towards the higher end of those numbers.  The swell really fills in sometime between noon and 3pm.

The seas forecast is up at 3-5 feet.

The winds switch out of the north northwest this morning around 7am.  The winds are light out of the northwest at first, then becoming light to moderate through the day.  It might blow as strong as 15 miles per hour.

The water temperature at Pier 60 is 67.6°.  Venice is at 69.8°. The water temps went down to about 63 behind that last front, but rest assured, they rebounded.

The high temps today are looking like they will be in the low 70s, 72°, 73° maybe. The highs will peak around their usual mid-day time, around 1pm.  The temps get back into the upper 70s a couple days after this front, and should approach 80° by Sunday.

The skies are mostly sunny in the morning.  The skies clear out in the afternoon.

Tides for Sand Key – Dec. 15th, 2016

I know you must be asking by now where the real surf is.  I’m asking myself the same question.  Why is it still so warm?  Why haven’t we had those fun windy onshore days?  It seems like almost everthing this season has been longboard surf, but let’s stay optimistic.  Strong cold fronts are sure to happen at some point this winter. There were a few mini shacks last Tues, but we need some full on sandbar drainers.
