Eight Eighty

This is the most well exposed spot in Clearwater. This spot breaks best on south swells in the summer and west swells in the winter. It surfs well on small summer swells when the tides are at mid to lower ranges.

During the summer, it breaks when most other spots don’t. Primarily during the summer the low tides facilitate the increase of wave size, but only more so on smaller swells, (knee to waist).  On larger swells it breaks like everywhere else along this sandbar.  It breaks just south of the 880 building on the sand bar. In the aireal photo above you can see the sandbar just south of 880 breaking during the summer. This shape of the wave  is impaired if the tide gets into the negative range.

This is also a fun spot in the winter. This is a super fun spot on West swells in the winter with east winds. It also breaks well on northwest swells in the winter. Just in front of the building (880 is it’s address), out in front of the pier, the wave gets super fun on west and northwest swells. It is super fun during winter cleanup days. The Caladesi shoals end just north of here.   Northwest and west swells to skirt these shoals and become amplified off this section of beach. This is one of the best and least crowded spots in Clearwater.  It is one of the best all around spots in Clearwater.
