Employers are Illogical and Ignorant

It’s amazing to think that a skilled multi-decade local surfer isn’t qualified to be a lifeguard on a local beach. That’s the conclusion that the city of Clearwater has made. I applied to lifeguard in Clearwater. I was told by lifeguards that they need people. I just wanted to do it for fun. Apparently I’m not qualified because I don’t have some sort of qualification training that you get in an office somewhere. Seems rediculous to me. It’s not like I wasn’t willing to get it. It’s more that I didn’t even get a call from someone saying, we would like you to lifeguard, we just need you to get a cpr class. Apparently people who know the coast, the gulf, the weather patterns, the tides and currents, and the people on the beach isn’t enough for someone to even call you back when you express interest in being a lifeguard, a job that there’s a shortage of. It’s absurd the way the world works. The reason for all this is complicated. I think greed is probably the best explanation.

  1. I’m just saying it’s crazy to think that one of the best qualified individuals to lifeguard could not even be considered. It’s errant decision making on the part of employers. I’m pointing out their irrational judgement. This isn’t about how much I want to be a lifeguard. 🙂

  2. So go get. And reapply. Yeah? Or was there additional bs being throw at you? Clearwater isn’t the only city locally that lifeguards their beaches. Good luck and don’t sweat it. Just move forward.✌

  3. Or from a YouTube video. Could read how to do it from an academic article probably. Maybe a scholastic resource on the web that’s public. It’s just bullshit hoops.

  4. Do you think a bachelors level educated individual couldn’t learn that shit in like 30 seconds from someone else who knows it? Even a high school grad could. Probably don’t even need high school to learn it in 30 seconds.

  5. It’s a scummy world we live in bro. That’s why those stupid hoops exist. Scummy people. Scummy people with scummy rules. Oppression at its finest.

  6. I mean it’s the Great Lake of Mexico! I believe it requires a David Hasslehoff to save the day around here. Jokes aside, I understand your perspective but you should just swallow your pride and get the CPR certification. And then apply through another city. Their loss anyway.✌
