This is just a quick update. Pinellas currently has no evacuation orders in place for the county despite being under a Hurricane warning from the National Hurricane Center. If you’re wondering if we’re going to be able to surf like I am I have a temporary and uncertain answer for you: Honeymoon Island State Park is getting closed tomorrow evening and will reopen after the storm I’m passed. The reopening will depend on Pinellas county’s decision to reopen the causeway according to a staff member at the park. That would mean that if you’re a north county resident who’s sticking around for this thing, and planning on surfing as the storm approaches you have to got Clearwater or even somewhere further south. In previous storms, ones that have been much milder than what we might expect from this one, the county shut down the bridges to make it impossible to get to the island. You might be thinking like I am, how will they do that? Are they going to risk the lives of police officers and keep them stationed on bridges through a major hurricane? It also makes you wonder, if it was safe enough to have police on the bridge in the past was it really even warranted to have them there in the first place? These are some things to consider. It may be difficult to get in the water as this major hurricane approaches. Please don’t do anything that would put you at risk of getting caught in this nasty storm.
