Snook season closes during the summer months while the snook spawn. Snook are closed from May 1st through August 31st. The harvest of snook opens back up just before Fall.
In recent years, we have had cold enough wintertime temperatures to kill mass quantities of snook. Fortunately, the snook populations have come back very strong. Many of the smaller, post freeze fish have made it to maturity, and some will be rotating out of the snook slot (the length range where snook are allowed to be recreationally harvested). During this time of year, it’s important to release not only the large females who release the eggs, but also the smaller males that fertilize the eggs. We want a healthy snook population for many years to come. We want our waters teeming with these beasts. Because, what a thrill it is to hook one, have it burn off 100 yards of fishing line in a matter of a few seconds, then roll on your leader, only to break you off. A thrill like nothing else.
